General Agriculture NVQ Level 1 - 33 weeks commencing 29th September 2000 (AD68/00)

·         This course supplies practical and theoretical tuition in crop growing, animal husbandry, introduction to use of farm machinery and basic farm maintenance methods.  It is suitable for both school-leavers and mature students who are entering their first year of practical experience in the agricultural industry.  A system of learning support is available for students if required.

 

Mixed Farming NVQ Level 2 - 33 weeks commencing 29th September 2000 (AD89/00)

9.15 am to 4.15 pm.  Year 1 course fee: £414.00. Fee remission: £160.00 

Year 2 course fee: £269.00.  Fee remission: £15.

·         This course is intended primarily for those who have completed NVQ Level 1 and have already acquired basic knowledge and skills.  The course is suitable for school leavers with some farming experience and for adults wishing to re-train.  It is important that this course is taken in conjunction with gaining practical work experience on a farm.
Options are available in livestock production, extensive crop production and/or mixed farming; delivered covering both conventional and organic farming methods.  Topics include: tractor driving and handling; establishing crops, cattle and sheep handling and care at lambing; livestock nutrition and farm maintenance.

 

Gamekeeping NVQ Level 2 - 30 weeks commencing 26th September 2000 (AD60/00)

9.15 am to 4.15 pm.  Year 1 course fee: £425.00.  Fee remission: £171.00.

Year 2 course fee: £269.00.  Fee remission: £15.00.

·         A mixture of practical activity, theoretical teaching and assistance with portfolio building.  Suitable for those involved in gamekeeping activities, or wish to become involved, who wish to achieve a recognised qualification.  The course is based on a game shoot on the College Estate.  A portfolio of evidence will be built to achieve the following NVQ units:

 

·         Assist in game shooting activities

·         Assist in the maintenance of game populations in their natural habitat

·         Assist in the management of game habitat

·         Assist in the prevention of trespass and poaching

·         Maintain and repair structures and surfaces e.g. fences, plumbing

·         This course is for those working in Gamekeeping with some responsibility.  Assistance will be given with portfolio building leading to a qualification recognised by the industry.  A portfolio of evidence will be built to achieve the following NVQ Units:

·         Manage wild game populations to maximise sustainable shooting potential

·         Contribute to the development of public relations for a sporting estate

·         Manage wild game habitat

·         Prevent poaching on a sporting estate

·         This course is designed for students who wish to gain experience in countryside related skills.  Topics include:  surveying landscapes and habitats, practical countryside skills including hedge planting, hedgelaying, coppicing, introduction to the safe use of chainsaws, tool maintenance and repair.  Students wishing to achieve this award would benefit from undertaking relevant practical work in conjunction with the course.

 

Higher National Certificate (HNC) Agriculture - 10 modules commencing 22nd September 2000 (AD16/00)  9.30 am to 4.30 pm.  Year 1 course fee: £455.00.  Year 2 course fee: £345.00.

Higher National Certificate (HNC) Countryside Management - (10 modules)

2 years one day per week commencing 21st September 2000.  9.30 am to 4.30 pm.

·         This course is designed for those pursuing a career in countryside management.  Each of the 10 modules runs for 6 weeks.  All 10 modules must be completed to achieve the HNC, but you can also select individual modules to suit your interests.  A wide range of topics are covered from landscape history and conservation management to planning and conflict management and project management.  Previous environmental experience is useful but not essential. Increasing importance is being placed on Health and safety, and with this in mind Plumpton College is offering a number of short courses, all of which lead to a recognised Certificate of Competence. For most of these courses the assessment for the Certificate of Competence can be taken at the end of the training courses. Courses are available on a rolling programme throughout the year.

 

Basic Food Hygiene – One day. Tuesday 5th December 2000.  9.30 am to 4.30 pm.  Course fee: £40.00.

·         This course is aimed at food handlers on farms, horticultural units, dairies and other processing plants, as well as employees in farm shops. The course leads to the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health’s Basic Food Hygiene Certificate.

 

Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines – Two days. Tuesday 27th February and 20th March 2001

9.30 am to 4.30 pm.  Course fee: £70.00.

·         This course will offer practical advice on the safe storage and safe use of veterinary medicines. It will give the knowledge and ability to plan, supervise, implement and monitor the use of veterinary medicines. Certificates are issued to successful students by the National Proficiency Tests Council. (NPTC).

 

Safe Use of Sheep Dips – One day. Tuesday 6th March 2001.  9.30 am to 12.30 pm.  1.30 to 3 pm approx.

Course fee: £25.00.

·         Recent legislation has meant that all purchases of organophosphorus and non-organophosphorus dips must have a Certificate of Competence. To achieve a certificate candidates must pass Part 1(oral test) plus Part 2 (written test). This day consists of: morning – training for both parts 1 and 2, afternoon – part 2 written test. Candidates successful in Part 2 will be invited back for Part 1. Assessments and certificates are organised by the National Proficiency Tests Council.

 

Animal Welfare – Half day.  Tuesday 10th October 2000.  1.30-4.30pm.  Course fee: £25.00.

·         The ‘owner‘ or keeper of livestock on farms has the responsibility to train and guide their stockman and women on the Welfare Code3s. This three-hour course covers these codes of practice and the responsibilities of the stockperson. A certificate of attendance is issued at the end of the session.

Rough Terrain Telescopic Lift Truck Operators (Group III)  Course fee: £385.00

Training and certification for Rough Terrain Telescopic Lift Truck Operators.  Training and assessment will be by fully trained and registered instructors.  All applicants for this course should be proficient in Tractor Driving operation.  Courses arranged on a rolling programme from 9.00 am - 5.00 pm each day.

Wildlife of Sussex - 10 weeks starting 24th April 2001 (AA2/00)  7pm to 9 pm.  Course fee: £50.00.

·         This course is designed to study the wildlife of Sussex involving local downland wildlife observation, surveys in specialist habitats, nestbox surveys, nestling ringing, mammal population surveys, tree and shrub identification.

 

Beekeeping Preliminary Course - 12 weeks starting 25th April 2001

1.30 to 4.30 pm.  Course fee: £70.00.  Fee remission: £15.00.

·         For people interested in beekeeping and those beekeepers wishing to take the examination for the BBKA Basic Beekeeping Certificate.  This certificate is a requirement for taking the BBKA Standard Certificate for Beekeeping Husbandry and BBKA Intermediate Certificate examinations.

 

Beekeeping Intermediate Course - Intermediate Honey Bee Biology  10 weeks starting 3rd January 2001.  1.30 to 4.30 pm.  Course fee: £75.00.  Fee remission: £15.00.

·         For people wishing to have a deeper understanding of beekeeping and particularly those studying for the BBKA Intermediate Certificate this is Module 4.  BBKA Intermediate Module 4 examination is in November 2001.  Note:  Four modules are required for the BBKA Intermediate Award.  Modules 1 and 3 will be offered during the academic year 2001/2.

 

Beekeeping Intermediate Course - Honey Bee Products and Forage  10 weeks starting 20th September 2000.  1.30 to 4.30 pm.  Course fee: £75.00.  Fee remission: £15.00.

·         For people wishing to have a deeper understanding of beekeeping; and particularly those studying for the BBKA Intermediate Certificate this is Module 2.  BBKA Intermediate Module 2 examination is in March 2001.  Note: Four modules are required for the BBKA Intermediate Award.  Modules 1 and 3 will be offered during the academic year 2001/2.

 

Beekeeping - Standard Certificate in Beekeeping Husbandry Course - a series of 30 sessions spread over 2 years starting 27th September 2000.  6.00 to 8.00 pm.  Course fee: £75.00.  Fee remission: £15.00.

·         For beekeepers wanting to improve their understanding and practice of beekeeping or wishing to take the examination for the BBKA Standard Certificate of Beekeeping Husbandry.
A series of theory and practical evenings to cover the topics requiring demonstration during the assessment for the “Standard” certificate.  Candidates wishing to take the examination will be required to demonstrate their practical skills and knowledge in their own apiary.

 

Small Scale Farming - 16 weeks starting 27th September 2000 (AE7/00)  10.30 am to 12.30 pm.

Course fee: £120.00.

·         This course is intended for people who may be considering, or are already engaged in, small scale farming and wish to make more productive use of their land.  The course will be covered mainly by lectures and will include livestock (cows, sheep, pigs, poultry and goats) and the land (machinery, soil types, grassland and management, fruit and vegetable production and beekeeping).  This course could lead to an NVQ Level 2 in mixed farming with a period of further study.  Further practical sessions will be available.

 

Advanced Small Scale Farming - 15 weeks starting 14th February 2001 (AE8/00)  10.30 am to

12.30 pm.  Course fee: £125.00.

·         This course is intended for those people who are currently engaged in small scale farming or those who have completed the Small Scale Farming Course and aims to cover topics in greater detail.  The course will cover major classes of livestock as well as machinery and some horticultural crops.  Part of the course covers adding value to farm produce.  Also, as part of this, the syllabus for the Basic Food Hygiene Certificate is covered and successful candidates are awarded the Environmental Health Basic Food Hygiene Certificate.  The course will take the form of lectures, practicals and visits.  Further practical sessions will be available.

 

Hedgelaying.  AD5/00 – One day. Tuesday 7th November 2000.  9.30 am to 4.30 pm.  Course fee: £40.00.

·         This course will provide practical instruction in the techniques used for hedgelaying. Topics include - tool identification and maintenance, safe work practices, hedgerow species identification.

 

Split Chestnut Hurdle Making. AD5/00 – One day. Tuesday 14th November 2000

·         Topics include: -Tools and equipment, cleaving and construction techniques of split chestnut hurdles.

·         A one-day course covering the equipment, materials and techniques to build split hazel wattle hurdles.

 


Farm and Countryside Seasonal Updates - 6 half-days spread through the year starting 3rd October 2000.  1.30 to 4.30 pm.  Course fee: £120.00.

·         This course is suitable for anyone interested in the countryside.  A series of 6 half-days aimed at updating rangers and countryside managers on current countryside issues, e.g. current practice and legislation.

·         This course will cover handling techniques for foot trimming, selection of ewes, injecting and routine tasks.

 

Cattle Foot Trimming.  AD5/00 - One day.  Tuesday 31st October 2000.

·         The course will offer practical advice and instruction and student practice on the trimming of cattle feet.

 

Calf Handling. AS3/00 – One day. Tuesday 28th November 2000

·         This course will cover the basic handling and routine stock tasks associated with keeping calves e.g. ear tagging, signs of health, haltering, taking temperature, castration.

 

Pig Handling. AS4/00 – Half day. Wednesday 15th November 2000

·         This course will cover the basic routine tasks associated with managing a pig herd, e.g. tattooing, teeth clipping, tail docking.

 

Pig Al. AS8/00 – Half day. Tuesday 21st November 2000

·         Topics include: - Sow and boar reproductive systems; materials and equipment required for Pig Al, practical insemination of pigs.

 

Lambing. AS6/00. One day 8th March 2001

·         A chance to be involved with a lambing flock and to learn about lambing techniques. Also, care of the ewe at lambing time.

 

Shearing for Beginners & Improvers. AS7/00 – Two days. 30th May and 31st May 2001

·         Setting up and maintaining cutters and comb. Shearing techniques. Rolling the fleece. A two day course covering instruction and practice in shearing including preparation, care of machines and presentation of wool for sale. A further day may be available on 1st June 2001.

BASIS FOR FARMERS

 

·         This two day BASIS course gives an introduction to the principles and practice of the management of crop protection.  Topics include recognition of crop disorder, pests, weeds & diseases and the cultural & chemical measures for their control.  Current legislation (inc. LERAP) is reviewed and the implications for operator & environment safety examined.  The BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection Management is awarded after successful completion of a one-hour examination.  This course provides a preliminary introduction to the full BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection.

 PART-TIME COURSES AT IVYLAND FARM

 

 

All new course members will have the opportunity to attend an induction week at Ivyland Farm commencing Monday 18th September.  During the week topics such as Safe Working Practices, First Aid, Introduction to Key Skills, Basic Tractor Driving etc will take place.  There will be an opportunity for the relevant course tutor to draw up each student’s individual action plan.

 

Day release classes will commence after this induction week.

Horticulture and Farm Experience commencing 4th September 2000

·         This course is designed for disabled adults and is available through relevant service providers.  Students can gain a nationally recognised qualification, ASDAN Level B, Towards Independence.  Two courses of one day per week are run every Monday or Thursday except Bank Holidays for a minimum period of two years.
A typical day will include looking after a small free-range chicken flock, visiting housed farm livestock, farm walks, basic horticulture including seed sowing and planting out, maintenance of lawns, shrubs, hedges and flowerbeds.

 

 

One and two day practical courses are offered at Ivyland Farm in the Following topics: -

Plumpton College

 

Plumpton College is situated in the centre of its own 647 hectare (1600 acre) estate which has a commercial farm, horticultural and equine units, small animal unit plus a vineyard and winery, all of which are used extensively by students.

 

Our courses vary in length and time of attendance from full-time to day release, block release and evening courses.  Many are taught in a practical manner to cover both vocational and recreational needs.

 

The courses are designed to meet the needs of students beginning their career, retraining or for those people who wish to increase their knowledge to enhance work or leisure opportunities.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Battle Outcentre

(Ivyland Farm)

 

Students from the centre and eastern end of the county may find it more convenient to study at the College’s outcentre at Ivyland Farm.

 

This is an 18 hectare (45 acre) farm with teaching facilities run by Plumpton staff.  The College has access to a further 60 hectares (150 acres) of adjoining farmland which is currently undergoing conversion to organic farming methods.  A horticultural unit has recently been established with protected cropping, a small orchard, herb beds and a vegetable garden.

 

A Woodland Skills Centre is being developed to cater for the needs of the Woodland Forestry Industries as well as for those people interested in countryside skills and woodland crafts.

Once you have decided which course is for you fill in the application form and return it to us, it is as simple as that.  Alternatively, you may like to telephone the College to reserve a place by using the credit card facilities.

 

A further option would be to attend one of the special enrolment sessions, when a representative from each department will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.  The dates are as follows:

 


Monday, 4 September 2000

2.00 pm – 4.00 pm

6.00 pm – 8.00 pm

 

Wednesday, 6 September 2000

2.00 pm – 4.00 pm

6.00 pm – 8.00 pm

 

 


To aid administration and to avoid disappointment, students are asked to register on their chosen course before it starts, rather than turn up on the first meeting of a class.

 

Fees

 

This is the amount a student is liable to pay for each year of their programme and includes: tuition fees, assessment fees, registration fee with the validation board (where appropriate) and a college registration fee

 

Registration (includes facilities charge)

 

A non refundable registration fee is incorporated in the course fee. registration fees are as follows:

 

Under 30 hours (1 term)  £5.00

30 hours to 60 hours (2 terms)            £10.00

Over 60 hours (3 terms) £15.00 (maximum payable with one year)

 

The course registration fee also acts as a facilities charge.  This gives free access to the facilities for the duration of the course.  This includes, car parking, student common room, Resources Centre, computer suite and the Sports and Social Club.

 

ALL FEES MUST BE PAID ON REGISTRATION FOR THE COURSE

 

These may be paid in instalments, please contact the College for more details.  The full name and address of any employer/sponsor must be given on the application form, if they are to accept responsibility for the course fees.  The employer/sponsor must also sign the application form.  If you are being sponsored through government funding (e.g. New Deal), please ensure that you tick the relevant box on the application form.

 

Refunds

 

It is the policy of the college that NO REFUNDS are made after the commencement of the course, except in extenuating circumstances and, at the discretion of the Principal.
