This course is
intended primarily for those who have completed NVQ Level 1 and have already
acquired basic knowledge and skills. The
course is suitable for school leavers with some farming experience and for
adults wishing to re-train. It is
important that this course is taken in conjunction with gaining practical work
experience on a farm.
Options are available in livestock production, extensive crop production
and/or mixed farming; delivered covering both conventional and organic farming
methods. Topics include: tractor
driving and handling; establishing crops, cattle and sheep handling and care
at lambing; livestock nutrition and farm maintenance.

environmental experience is useful but not essential. Note: Individual modules

Increasing importance is being placed on Health and safety, and with this in mind Plumpton College is offering a number of short courses, all of which lead to a recognised Certificate of Competence. For most of these courses the assessment for the Certificate of Competence can be taken at the end of the training courses. Courses are available on a rolling programme throughout the year.
Basic Food Hygiene One day. Tuesday 5th December 2000. 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. Course fee: £40.00.

This course is aimed
at food handlers on farms, horticultural units, dairies and other processing
plants, as well as employees in farm shops. The course leads to the Chartered
Institute of Environmental Healths Basic Food Hygiene Certificate.
Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines
Two days. Tuesday 27th February and 20th March 2001

am to 4.30 pm. Course fee: £70.00.

This course will
offer practical advice on the safe storage and safe use of veterinary
medicines. It will give the knowledge and ability to plan, supervise,
implement and monitor the use of veterinary medicines. Certificates are issued
to successful students by the National Proficiency Tests Council. (NPTC).
Safe Use of Sheep Dips
One day. Tuesday 6th March 2001. 9.30

Recent legislation
has meant that all purchases of organophosphorus and non-organophosphorus dips
must have a Certificate of Competence. To achieve a certificate candidates
must pass Part 1(oral test) plus Part 2 (written test). This day consists of:
morning training for both parts 1 and 2, afternoon part 2 written
test. Candidates successful in Part 2 will be invited back for Part 1.
Assessments and certificates are organised by the National Proficiency Tests
Council.
Animal Welfare
Half day. Tuesday 10th
October 2000. 1.30-4.30pm.

The owner or
keeper of livestock on farms has the responsibility to train and guide their
stockman and women on the Welfare Code3s. This three-hour course covers these
codes of practice and the responsibilities of the stockperson. A certificate
of attendance is issued at the end of the session.

designed to study the wildlife of Sussex involving local downland wildlife
observation, surveys in specialist habitats, nestbox surveys, nestling
ringing, mammal population surveys, tree and shrub identification.

interested in beekeeping and those beekeepers wishing to take the examination
for the BBKA Basic Beekeeping Certificate.
This certificate is a requirement for taking the BBKA Standard
Certificate for Beekeeping Husbandry and BBKA Intermediate Certificate
examinations.

to have a deeper understanding of beekeeping and particularly those studying
for the BBKA Intermediate Certificate this is Module 4.
BBKA Intermediate Module 4 examination is in November 2001.

demonstrate their practical skills and knowledge in their own apiary.

Scale Farming - 16

This course is
intended for people who may be considering, or are already engaged in, small
scale farming and wish to make more productive use of their land.
The course will be covered mainly by lectures and will include
livestock (cows, sheep, pigs, poultry and goats) and the land (machinery, soil
types, grassland and management, fruit and vegetable production and
beekeeping). This course could
lead to an NVQ Level 2 in mixed farming with a period of further study.
Further practical sessions will be available.
Advanced Small Scale Farming - 15 weeks starting 14th February 2001 (AE8/00) 10.30 am to
12.30 pm. Course fee: £125.00.

This course is
intended for those people who are currently engaged in small scale farming or
those who have completed the Small Scale Farming Course and aims to cover
topics in greater detail. The
course will cover major classes of livestock as well as machinery and some
horticultural crops. Part of the
course covers adding value to farm produce.
Also, as part of this, the syllabus for the Basic Food Hygiene
Certificate is covered and successful candidates are awarded the Environmental
Health Basic Food Hygiene Certificate. The
course will take the form of lectures, practicals and visits.

BASIS
FOR FARMERS
· This two day BASIS course gives an introduction to the principles and practice of the management of crop protection. Topics include recognition of crop disorder, pests, weeds & diseases and the cultural & chemical measures for their control. Current legislation (inc. LERAP) is reviewed and the implications for operator & environment safety examined. The BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection Management is awarded after successful completion of a one-hour examination. This course provides a preliminary introduction to the full BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection.

Horticulture
and Farm Experience

This course is
designed for disabled adults and is available through relevant service
providers. Students can gain a
nationally recognised qualification, ASDAN Level B, Towards Independence.
Two courses of one day per week are run every Monday or Thursday except
Bank Holidays for a minimum period of two years.
A typical day will include looking after a small free-range chicken flock,
visiting housed farm livestock, farm walks, basic horticulture including seed
sowing and planting out, maintenance of lawns, shrubs, hedges and flowerbeds.

Plumpton
College
Plumpton College is situated in the centre of its own 647 hectare (1600 acre) estate which has a commercial farm, horticultural and equine units, small animal unit plus a vineyard and winery, all of which are used extensively by students.
Our courses vary in length and time of attendance from full-time to day release, block release and evening courses. Many are taught in a practical manner to cover both vocational and recreational needs.
The courses are designed to meet the
needs of students beginning their career, retraining or for those people who
wish to increase their knowledge to enhance work or leisure opportunities.
Battle
Outcentre
(Ivyland
Farm)
Students from the centre and eastern end of the county may find it more convenient to study at the Colleges outcentre at Ivyland Farm.
This is an 18 hectare (45 acre) farm with teaching facilities run by Plumpton staff. The College has access to a further 60 hectares (150 acres) of adjoining farmland which is currently undergoing conversion to organic farming methods. A horticultural unit has recently been established with protected cropping, a small orchard, herb beds and a vegetable garden.
A Woodland Skills Centre is being
developed to cater for the needs of the Woodland Forestry Industries as well
as for those people interested in countryside skills and woodland crafts.

This gives free access to the facilities for the duration of the
course. This includes, car
parking, student common room, Resources Centre, computer suite and the Sports
and Social Club.

may be paid in instalments, please contact the College for more details.
The full name and address of any employer/sponsor must be given on the
application form, if they are to accept responsibility for the course fees.
The employer/sponsor must also sign the application form. If you are being sponsored through government funding
(e.g. New Deal), please ensure that you tick the relevant box on the
application form.
It
is the policy of the college that NO REFUNDS are made after the commencement
of the course, except in extenuating circumstances and, at the discretion of
the Principal.
